It was on The Specials' album "live at the Moonlight Club" that deadpan frontman, Terry Hall said in his broad West Midlands accent "I haven't got much to say tonight. It's the eve of the election , and it's up to you." (my favourite band of all time, by the way)
This was recorded on 3rd May 1979, the day before one Margaret Thatcher swept to power, amongst unrest all around the UK, huge unemployment figures, and a crippling recession. Could this be déjà vu, déjà entendu, déjà senti?
Unfortunately nothing much has changed in 31 years, no matter who I voted for in the past the Government always got in - and this is limited by the nonsensical electoral system that promotes the duopoly of power, which the two main parties want to keep that way, until now that is.....
The prospect of a hung parliament is quite possible (in my opinion hanging is way too good for them - besides who's going to pay for the rope?) and I really relish the thought that these people who have put themselves in front of me to be elected can really get to earn their money by learning to communicate more effectively than ever before. In many other countries "hung" parliaments work - though if you'd believe the Daily Mail, this will cause the whole of the UK to get cancer and lower our house prices and encourage mass immigration through the tunnel who will take all our jobs.
At last a chance for politicians to show us they can communicate with each other and get on with it.
So
Do you want Change to affect you?
or
Do you want to effect Change?
It's as simple as that
I know what I want, so now as Terry says...It's up to you.
It's Up To You
Dammers / Hall / Panter / Golding / Bradbury / Staples / Byers
What you gonna do, when guests drop in on you?
We won't go away, 'cos we've come out to stay
Stand there like parked cars if you want to
We can't force you to enjoy this music
Take it or leave it we'll carry on regardless
If you don't like it you don't have to use it
It's up to you, up to you
It's up to you, up to you
It's up to you, up to you
It's up to you, up to you
Looks like a case of the blind leading the deaf to me
You must be bored out of your pants
Take it or leave it we'll carry on regardless
If you don't like it you don't have to dance
It's up to you, up to you, black
It's up to you, up to you, white
It's up to you, up to you, unite
It's up to you, up to you, or fight
In London town you can hear the youth them say "Take warning"
It's up to you what you really wanna do
For you were standing on the corner giving trouble
When the policeman come he say you have to move on the double, yeah
So, steppin' up the street with my little rude girl
With her 'stay-pressed' to her ankles
It's up to her what she really wants to do
It's up to you, you and strictly you and you
What you gonna do, when morons come for you?
They won't go away, they want the whole world painted grey
It's up to you, up to you
It's up to you, up to you
It's up to you, up to you
It's up to you, up to you
